Mothers of May, Raya Delcheva


This project is inspired by a group of women who met through social media in 2016. What brought them together was the fact that in May the next year their children would be born. For the last four years these mothers have been sharing their experience, supporting one another and celebrating the big achievements of their small children.

Urban environment and modern way of life can cause relative isolation for women on maternity leave. Online communication provides them with the unique opportunity to exchange information on child-raising, tell a joke at 4 am, and to laugh at ridiculous birthday cakes. For the last four years these women have been part of a large online community. They are helpful, funny, caring and inspiring.

The portraits for this project were made in a period of three years and are an example of how social media can serve to create an atmosphere of trust and provide a platform for constructive sharing.
